Immerse yourself in the most unspoiled region of the Indonesian Archipelago. The Nihiwatu eco lodge is 438 acres of tropical forest, rice terraces and grasslands wrapped around the stunning two and half kilometers long Nihiwatu beach. This Eco lodge has only seven bungalows and three two bedroom villas that have been hand built by Indonesian craftsmen.
We love:

Eco Friendly Highlights:
Bio-diesel fuel to power the eco lodge is produced from coconuts purchased from local villagers. The Sumba Foundation, co-founded by the resort owners, constructed a bio-diesel factory at Nihiwatu as one of their many social and economic initiatives.
Nihiwatu eco lodge provides the sustainability for the project with its $10,000 a month purchases of the bio-fuel. Hundreds of families are benefitting from their selling coconuts to this project.
To offset their carbon footprint they have so far planted 64,000 Teak trees in a 12 hectare area. Waste water from the accommodation and public area is treated in small bio-mass treatment plants and then recycled to water the grass and garden areas, on the beach thousands of turtles are hatched and released each year.
Thanks to this small eco-resort and its Sumba Foundation more than 20,000 thousand Sumbanese living in 400 traditional villages now have access to clean water from 40 wells, vastly improved health due to its
5 medical clinics, and better education from the 11 schools they support. Since 2005 Nihiwatu has won all major responsible tourism awards and is is recognized as a world leader of responsible and environmental tourism. |
