Peter, the owner, is Chairman of “Friends of Flora” Community Conservation Group. After 10 years of trapping introduced predators in a rugged area 10,000 hectare area, this dedicated group of volunteers has reduced stoat numbers to some of the lowest in the country. This makes the Mount Arthur area in Kahurangi National Park one of the few areas, outside island sanctuaries, where endangered and declining species can be re-introduced.
The owners and several Resurgence guests, sponsored Des, a former groundsman, in his “Long Walk to save the kiwis”, 1250km down the length of South Island. In 2006 Whio (Blue Duck) bred in the Flora Stream for the first time in 12 years. In 2010 12 adult Great Spotted Kiwi (Roroa) were relocated by Friends of Flora and DOC into the Mount Arthur for the first time in 40 years. From 2009 for 3 years, The Resurgence is donating $5 per couple to Return of the Kiwi Project.
